DIY Easter Planning 2015

Easter always reminds me of just how much my mother was a seasoned saver.

I remember one year I must have been eight or nine and we lived in Motueka in what I now call the wop wops.
I wasn’t expecting to celebrate with chocolate eggs but much to my surprise after I got out of bed she had been walking around the house unbeknownst to us kids, placing foiled eggs as well as a couple bigger ones in hiding places!  She didn’t tell us but must have been brimming with excitement herself, and when I found one in my room later that day the excitement between us kids hit the roof! We took all day to find them around the house and garden.  Such a happy memory.

Now one year Mark and I were really struggling to make the finances stretch, and every year prior I’d brought the big expensive eggs from the store to carry on my mothers enthusiasm, but that year – I just couldn’t.

Ever since that year I refuse to break, and buy into the marketing gimmick so we’ve done alternative things each year.

This is a DIY mold I got from Countdown a few years ago:

This year I thought filling the large ones could be fun

I’ve just brought a bunch of molds off Ebay, spent just over $NZ 20.00 and quite proud of that budget.

What does Easter cost you in your house?

Sunday & Soap Cupboard Tour

A overcast day here in Christchurch this Sunday.

20150222_13483020150222_134856

It’s been drizzling gently this morning, quite a peace inducing kind of rain.

All the gardens are looking lush and quenched by it.

Not surprising since it was extremely humid and hot, so much to get a solid sleep last-night, it was still 25’c inside at 10pm when I was checking on the latest soap batch.

The kids went outside this morning to grab some blackboy peaches.

Bella thought it was playtime and took a leap from our deck landing half way into our backyard to chase the kids ankles and see if they’ll entertain her idea to play?

Nope.  She had to go rile Marley up instead.  He was happy to oblige.

The kids have been rowdy as all hell this morning, squealing and cackling as they roar around the house… is quite smile inducing, even so, I’ve put spotify on to drown them out a bit. I gave them their 1hr limit to play on their kindle fires quite early so I could eat/drink brunch in peace, then told them to go open the games chest.

The peace and quiet surely is back. Phew

It’s still really grey outside so I’m not keen to venture out for a walk with it bursting into drizzling every now and then.  Its still really warm even with all the windows open.

Love lazy weekends.

I found Bob hiding to escape the rowdy kids antics. Between my office cupboard and some stock shelving. Clever Cat.

I reckon Mark absolutely loves this cat even more than his dog.  I catch him during cuddles, during secret chats and pats with Bob.  Usually I shout out “YOU LOVE HIM”!! Ha!

Yesterday as soon as Mark pulled up they both shouted “dads home!! dad’s home! quick!” then raced around and did the “shove it under the mat” trick just in the nick of time, I’ve never seen the kids do that before they must really want their current good behavior and keep your mess tidy – bribes 😉

Its the weekend, so I’ll go along with it.

Who want’s to see my soap so far? Mark built some shelves in our humble little hot water cupboard for me 🙂

A big batch of the creamy white one went to my sister – thank goodness as I was running out of room.

The presents will be out after Ella’s birthday next week so that will give me a couple more shelves for batches I’m itching to whip up.

It just started drizzling again so the dogs came up to huddle under the eaves on the deck.

Of course the beautiful Bella had to get out of the way for Marley to get his photo taken.

Sounds like the kids game of cludo is about to get thrown across the room.

Diary entry for Feb. Tick!

Hope you’re enjoying some down time too this weekend 🙂

Ella’s Birthday 2015

Ella’s Birthday is 1st of March, this year I’m well ahead of schedule.

I went out to Kmart to get some mason jars for a pedicure kit I’m designing for the online store but they didn’t have what I wanted, I want those little jars with the metal clasp on them that as you pull down on it – it seals the jar shut.  I think warehouse and briscoes might be a good place to visit, I’m wanting really little ones to fit around 100-150grams.

So while at Kmart I went a bit off the deep end in the craft section.

We had a brainstorm with Ella and Brook at the dinner table a few weeks ago, we asked her what she’d like for her birthday this year? and after hearing a pony, this and that… we said – look we’ve got around $100 so you’ll have to choose within that budget and you can even have the change.

So Mark comes to me one day and he’s brought Ella the perfect bike for $70 off trademe practically brand spanking new and likely a kid that was more into malls or an iphone.  Score for us!

I’ve got $30 left to get Ella the craft stuff she is dying to have of her own.

She’s always into my kit and sometimes its great because she’s really getting more and more creative each time, I love that she shares my gift in creativity.

I’m a bit attached to my craft tools and supplies so am dead keen to set her up with her own.

So that’s what I did…. as I walked around Kmart I found this and that in their $4 section.

Bargains – absolute bargains I tell ya!

Then I found an easel!! $15!! whoop, and into the trolley it goes.

Ooh she’ll need a back board for that easel – $7 wtf? $7 for a board of cardboard… OK then. Carry on.

And then….

I found a DIY stamp set!

Oooh she’ll love this 🙂

She’s always into my stamps.

Actually. I quite like this kit. hmmm

And paint! you need paint for an easel, and you need all the primary colors right? right!

Brushes

10 meters of paper on a roll

I was on a roll…. I tell ya!

Then I found $2 plastic pyrex jugs! Oooh! I NEED those…. and more spatulas, never have enough of those, good god look at that cute little mini whisk! just $2 – in she goes.

A painters smock.  $6! well ok then.

It kind of became a blur but when I looked in the trolley it was a done deal

Woohoo check out Ella’s set up! Birthday 2015 is going to be Epic Fun.

I’m gonna sneak in her room when she’s asleep and set up her art corner 🙂

Can’t wait!

All of the oversize bows are made of packaging tissue paper cut into strips, joined together to go around the parcels.

Cost’s peanuts to make gifts look gorgeous for loved ones

Best School Holidays Ever!

The 2014/2015 Summer School Holidays have been awesome!

  • Two weeks of close down for the salon
  • Mark was home for Christmas
  • Christmas day at home was lovely
  • The weathers been perfect! just enough hot days with just enough inside cooler days.
  • The kids behavior has been amazing – hardly any bickering like usually happens especially towards the end of the holidays.
  • Marks end of year work doo was great at lincoln
  • Time with friends and family has been lovely

Highlights

  • Christmas day at ours
  • Boxing day at my brothers
  • Birthday lunch at the watershed for Mary and Rex (grandad)
  • Spent my sisters wedding anniversary with her and her husband
  • Brook went camping for a night, this was his first night away from home and amazingly I wasn’t the least bothered, great trustworthy and responsible family. He asked them and stayed a second night!
  • Brook went to adrenaline forest with them which he loved.
  • All the crafting and sending overseas as well as NZ cards and parcels – so much fun
  • My homemade copycat recipes have been amazing and everyone seems to love them
  • Finally learnt to make cold process soap! got over the fear of lye burns and it was so much fun
  • Mark’s been amazing and floated in and out of our schedule seamlessly from his long work hours and days off
  • Day at Pegasus, even though we were all cranky as all hell – we went and it was a breath of fresh air
  • Brooks been running lots throughout the holidays while us girls ride our bikes/scootas
  • Kids LOVE their Christmas presents! Kindle Fires, Ella’s reading and writing has got so much better and she has developed a love of crafting!
  • Kids have taken to their chores like ducks to water over the holidays.  I think I might reduce these for 2015 so they can have more time and energy for their schoolwork and sports!
  • Sports for 2015 – better get that organized! Equally nervous about adding sports to our already odd/busy schedule.
  • Had some wonderful times with our friends over the holidays and realized just how poorly some people had treated my friendship over 2014 so have cut ties with them. Feels empowering.
  • We got a kitten!! and Bella loves him. So does Mark!! Its so good to have a pet “inside” the house again.
  • Lots of swimming these holidays
  • Mark has had a few technique lessons courtesy of Brendan and Laura – his swimming has really improved
  • Mark sold my little hatch RunX and is looking at wagons.

The holidays have gone way too fast! I am already looking forward to the Easter 2015 holidays and to Christmas break 2015.

I always remind myself how different the holidays now are, compared to working in the CBD where my 3 weeks holiday over the office close down were full of stress about holiday programmes and schedules for the remainder three weeks, six weeks felt like eternity with the stress of working away from home, so I’m forever grateful for being able to work from home, have this time with the family and for us to live a relaxed NZ lifestyle.

Life is so good.

2015 is going to be amazing! even winter has me excited, I’m full of inspiration by my crafts to make winter less dreary.

Some things on my to do list:

  • Make seasonal cushion covers for our oversize couch cushions
  • Get the curtains hemmed before winter and condensation – they’re way too long
  • Get weight resistance back into my exercise schedule
  • Keep up with the salon promos to suit the seasons
  • Enjoy each day to the fullest 7am-11pm 😉

I hope you have also had a great set of holidays and your 2015 is your best year to date.
